Houten ( listen? / I ) is a municipality in the Dutch province of Utrecht.

Position, traffic and business

History

The point at which is now Houten was already inhabited in Roman times. Later, there were Franconian peasants.

In the 12th century began the construction of the later Reformed Church. The construction of the towers took place starting in 1535. During the Middle Ages, the development of the village focused around the church. At some distance from the Reformed Church in the years 1884-1885, designed by architect Alfred Tepel neo-Gothic Catholic church Onze Lieve Vrouwe th Hemelopneming ( Assumption) was born. The name is derived from the word Haltna Houten, means the place of residence in the bush or forest.

The Heemstede castle was built around 1645. In 1987 it was badly damaged by fire. Around 1997 it was restored.

Houten in 1979 reported as growth center because of its location near the city of Utrecht and its rail link to 's- Hertogenbosch. The area around the train station Houten is the new center of the community, while the "old village" now is a bit remote.

In the 1990s, a plan was presented, after Houten is very growing. Ten new housing developments ( larger needles Wijken ), including the " Castellum " in the south, should occur in the near future. The municipality has 48,416 inhabitants ( 1 January 2013).
