Howard Atherton

Howard William Atherton ( born August 12, 1947 in Ilford ) is a British cinematographer.

Life and work

A native of the Greater London Atherton had attended the London Film School and worked successively as a camera loader (1970 in the film " Melody " ), a simple camera man (known as camera operator ) and finally as chief cameraman ( director of cinematography ). Between his orders for the movie he also photographed repeatedly advertising (including several beers, the Volkswagen Group and the Times).

In the 70 years, Atherton earned his living as a simple cameraman and photographed from several prominent productions, including the Monty Python hit the Holy Grail, and as second-unit cameraman 1978/79, the two science fiction films Alien - The uncanny beings from another world, and The Empire Strikes Back.

In 1982, he received an offer to work as director of photography for the film for the first time. Atherton's breakthrough came in the second half of the 80s in Hollywood with the thriller Fatal Attraction. In the following seven years, he photographed more predominantly commercially successful U.S. productions as Black Rain (only on-site photography in Japan), Mermaids better, Indecent Proposal and Bad Boys - Harte Jungs. Since its participation in the Lolita remake by Adrian Lyne, where he had replaced his colleagues Jeffrey Kimball during the filming (1995 /96), Atherton was not involved in any box office more.

Atherton, who has kept in later years also lectured at his old alma mater in London, has been awarded twice for his achievements in the field of photography. In 1996 he received the RTS ' Craft and Design: Camera' Award and the Kodak Award for his work on the two-part TV movie Gulliver's Travels. In the same year he received an Emmy nomination.
