Howard Berman

Howard Lawrence Berman ( born April 15, 1941 in Los Angeles ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party, and since 1983 member of the U.S. House of Representatives for California.

In the 2012 election, he defeated his Democratic competitor Brad Sherman.

Biography

After attending the Hamilton High School in Los Angeles, he studied from 1959 to 1962 at the University of California, Los Angeles ( UCLA) and completed this study with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). A subsequent post-graduate studies in law at the Law School at UCLA, he finished in 1965 with a Bachelor of Laws ( LL.B. ). Afterwards he worked after his admission to the bar and in the meantime from 1966 to 1967 when volunteer program Volunteers in Service to America.

His political career began in 1973 with the Berman Elected to the State Assembly in California (California State Assembly ), to which he belonged not only to 1982, but the Majority Leader ( Majority Leader ) as leader of the Democrats, he was from 1974 to 1980. He was also in 1968, 1976 and 1984 Delegate of the Democratic National Convention for nomination of the Democratic U.S. presidential candidate.

In 1982 he was finally elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and represents there after 13 subsequent re- elections since 3 January 1983 to 26 and January 3, 2003 28 Congressional District of California. Since 2007, Howard Berman is chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee ( House Committee on Foreign Affairs ) and is currently a member of the Judiciary Committee ( House Committee on the Judiciary ).
