Howard County (Arkansas)

History

The Howard County was formed on April 17, 1873 from parts of Hempstead County, Pike County, Polk County and Sevier County. It was named after James H. Howard, a senator in Arkansas.

The first county seat was Centerpoint. 1905 this was Nashville, because the Arkansas & Louisiana Railroad ran from Nashville to Hope.

One of the first settlers in the area was John Tollett, a Methodist from the Bledsoe County, Tennessee, who settled here from 1819. After two years earlier explored the area, he made ​​all preparations to deal with several families to move here too. In 1819 he came up with the families and a large number of slaves and settled here. 1825, the first sawmill was built in 1842 and established the first post office.
