Howard Fried

Howard Fried ( born June 14, 1946 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA) is an American avant-garde conceptual artist, video artist and performance artist.

Life and work

Howard Lee Fried studied at Syracuse University in New York from 1964 to 1967 and at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. In 1967 he worked at the Cleveland Art Institute, from 1967 to 1968 at the San Francisco Art Institute and from 1968 to 1970 at the University of California.

He had his first solo exhibition in 1969 in the Art Company in Sacramento. Howard Fried was a participant in Documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972 in the Department of Individual Mythologies: Overview - Performances - Activities - Changes and video. The performance, which he performed at the Documenta 5, is typical of his work: Indian War Dance consisted of himself and an opponent who fought in a simulated studio environment against each other.

Fried lives and works in San Francisco.
