Howard Nemerov

Howard Nemerov (* February 29, 1920 in New York City; † July 5, 1991 in University City, Missouri) was an American Literature teacher, poet and Pulitzer Prize-winning Russian- Jewish descent.

Life

Howard Nemerov was the only son of David Nemerov and his wife Gertrude Russek. His parents owned the fur and fashion department store Russeks on Fifth Avenue in New York. Nemerov's parents left the education of their three children, the staff and each child had his own nanny. He had two younger sisters: Diane (1923-1971), a renowned photographer, and Renée ( born 1928 ), a successful sculptor and interior designer. Howard Nemerov studied at Harvard University, where he received the Bachelor. During the Second World War he served as a pilot, first in the Royal Canadian Air Force and later in the United States Army Air Forces with the rank of lieutenant. Howard Nemerov married on January 26, 1944 Margaret Russell, with her he had a son, David Nemerov. After the war, he taught as a literature lecturer at various colleges and universities, including at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, at Bennington College in Bennington, at Brandeis University in Waltham and most recently at Washington University in St. Louis. Howard Nemerov died of cancer in University City and was buried in the family grave in New York City.
