Howard R. Hughes, Sr.

Howard Robard Hughes, Sr. ( born September 9, 1869 in Lancaster, Missouri; † January 14, 1924 in Houston, Texas) was an American inventor, entrepreneur and founder of the Hughes Tool Company.

Life and work

Hughes studied at Harvard University and at the University of Iowa to make without a degree. Yet He then worked as a lawyer. Soon he was more interested in oil production and moved to Texas. Together with a partner, he ran a drilling company. To be able to drill through rock, he developed new drilling heads, which he had patented. His drill heads were found to be powerful in rock strata and allowed the oil production of previously accessible resources. In 1909 founded his partner Walter Sharp and he Sharp -Hughes Tool Company. After the death of Sharp 1912, he led the company alone and took some time later, the shares of the Sharp family. In 1915 the company was renamed Hughes Tool Company.
