Howard Rheingold

Howard Rheingold ( born 1947 in Arizona, United States) is an American social scientist and author. He has been working for decades with the socio-cultural and political impact of new technologies and thereby enabled forms of communication.

Life

He studied psychology at Reed College, State University of New York. Since 1985, he has at The WELL - to describe the most appropriate and Bulletin Board System - participated. In 1994 he was involved in the founding of Hotwired, the website of Wired Magazine.

With his 1993 book " Virtual Community - Homesteading on the Electronic Frontier " Rheingold coined the term " virtual community ". In its publication, Smart Mobs: The Next Social Revolution ( 2002), he examined how Internet technologies and lifestyle contribute to cross-border collaboration and the emergence of collectively intelligent systems. His latest work " Net Smart: How to Thrive Online" (2012 ) deals with the intelligent use of new information and communication technologies for information filtering and dissemination.
