Howard Saunders

Howard Saunders ( born September 16, 1835 in London, † October 20, 1907 ) was a British businessman and ornithologist.

Life and work

Saunders was educated at Leatherhead and Rottingdean. He then became clerk in the banking house Anthony Gibbs and Sons. The foreign connections of his employer allowed him, in 1855 to travel to South America where he visited Chile and Brazil, and developed his love for Ornithology. From 1862 to 1868, he studied the avifauna in Spain and published his observations in the journal Ibis. 1883 and 1884 he was in the Pyrenees on the go. In 1891, he published articles on the birds of Switzerland and in 1893 the post The Distribution of Birds in France.

Saunders ' main research focus were the gulls and terns, which he, in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, the Journal of the Linnean Society and the journal Ibis wrote posts Catalogue of the Birds in the British Museum, including the first scientific description of Antarktikskua ( Catharacta maccormicki ).
