Howard Sutherland

Howard Sutherland ( born September 8, 1865 Kirkwood, Missouri, † March 12, 1950 in Washington DC ) was an American politician ( Republican), who represented the state of West Virginia in both houses of Congress.

Howard Sutherland was up to his 25th birthday at home in Missouri, where he attended the public schools in St. Louis and the Westminster College in Fulton. From 1889 to 1890 he worked in Fulton as a newspaper editor before he moved to Washington. There he studied at the Columbian University law and worked for the precursor to the United States Census Bureau.

1893 Sutherland had settled in Elkins, West Virginia. He worked as a businessman in the mining industry, as a partner in a railway company and in the timber industry. Finally, he was also politically active. From 1908 to 1912 he was a member of the Senate of West Virginia; after, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he remained until 1917. As a result, he moved within the Congress in the Senate. After a six -year term, he missed the 1922 re-election when he was defeated by Democrat Matthew M. Neely. During his time in the Senate he was chairman of several committees.

In the run up to the presidential elections 1920, Sutherland ran for his party's nomination for the highest office. At the Republican National Convention in Chicago, he received 17 delegate votes in the first ballot; in the following three urn transitions that number was respectively less, whereupon Sutherland eventually withdrew his candidacy. The Republicans finally nominated Warren G. Harding. After his retirement from the Senate Howard Sutherland returned to Elkins, where he was doing business again. He was Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce of West Virginia and chaired a committee for the development of public roads. Finally, he sat down to rest in Washington, where he died in 1950.

Sutherland was the father of six children. His only son Richard served during World War II as a lieutenant general in the U.S. Army and served on the staff of Douglas MacArthur.
