Howth Head

Howth Head ( Ceann Irish Bhinn Éadair ) is a peninsula in the north of Dublin in the Republic of Ireland, near the towns of Sutton and Portmarnock. Largest city of the peninsula is Howth.

Originally an island, Howth Head is now joined by a narrow strip of land to the mainland. Howth Head is the northern end of the wide-ranging crescent of Dublin Bay, which terminates in the south with Killiney Head.

At the southeastern end point of Howth Head Lighthouse is the Baily Lighthouse.

As one of the northern termini of the Dublin Area Rapid Transit System (DART ) Howth is a popular tourist destination, especially for day-trippers from Dublin. For walkers there are at the highest point Howths an old cairn, from which you can see in good weather the Wicklow Mountains with Dublin city center in the foreground.

Originally Howth was a fishing village, but especially the economic boom in the 1990s and the gradual dying off of the fishing industry in the area changed the appearance of Howth in the last two decades. On the peninsula, the portal tomb Aideen 's Grave, is (also title of a book by William Butler Yeats ). The megalith is also known as Finn mac Cools quoits.
