Hoxne

Hoxne [ hɔksn̩ ] is a municipality ( parish ) and a district ( ward ) in the north of the English county of Suffolk in the Mid Suffolk District. The place Hoxne lies about a kilometer south of the River Waveney, which forms the border with Norfolk. At the 2001 census, 813 inhabitants were determined for the municipality and 1,932 for the District of Hoxne.

History

The area around Hoxne was already inhabited in the Palaeolithic period. Finds of stone tools, the John Frere (1740-1807), a pioneer of prehistoric research made ​​in 1797 and of which he reported in a letter to the Society of Antiquaries of London, testify to this. As the importance of the finds about 100 years after the discovery was revealed, known as Holstein - interglacial warm period in Germany in the UK was called Hoxnian interglacial.

A treasure was found from the Roman period on 16 November 1992 known as the hoard of Hoxne. It contains over 15,000 gold and silver coins, gold jewelry and various pieces silver tableware, including pepper shakers and over 100 ladles and spoons. The latest coin of the hoard was 407/ 08 marked. A year earlier the last Roman troops left the island to protect the endangered Rhine frontier of the Roman Empire. Attractions

In the village there is a pub called the Swann Inn is located in a building formerly known as Bishops Lodge designated. The Bishop of Norwich had this house built around 1480.
