Hreðavatn

The Hreðavatn is a lake in the west of Iceland in the field of Borgarbyggð.

Geography

It is located about 25 km north of Borgarnes near the Hringvegur (Ring Road No. 1) in the boarding high school Bifrost. The Grábrók crater rise not far away and their lava also extends along the eastern shore of the lake.

The length of the Hreðavatn is about 5 km, its area 1.3 km ², its depth about 20 m.

In the lake, you can fish for trout.

The immediate environment is characterized by a large lava field, gentle moorland and small forest plantations ( cf. reforestation ). The area must have been forested in the past. It has been here about 6.5 - 7 million years old discovered Holzkohlenflöze whose composition indicates species as they are now native to Central Europe. This suggests that the climate at that time was much milder than it is today.

In the not too distant future rises the perfect cone of the leatherback.
