Hrubá Skála

Hruba Skala ( German United Skal, also Großskal ) is a municipality in the Czech Republic. It is located six kilometers south-east of Turnov on the European road 442 in the Bohemian Paradise and belongs to Okres Semily.

History

The place name derives from the location of the former castle Skala, which lay on a rock and was first mentioned in 1353, when she was in possession of the Hynek of Wallenstein. It was the seat of the same basic rule Skala, which since the 18th century as a major Skal ( Hruba Skala ), to distinguish of the nearby small Skal ( Mala Skala ) was designated. Beginning of the 16th century, it consisted of 54 villages and belonged to the lords of Boskowitz. 1515 acquired Sigmund Smiřický of Smiřice the rule. The Smiřický of Smiřice enlarged the dominion, modernized agriculture and established manufacturers. This was Great Skal early 17th century to one of the largest Bohemian dominions. After the possessions of the Smiřický of Smiřice were confiscated after the Battle of White Mountain, United Skal fell again to the Lords of Waldstein. During the Thirty Years War, the rule in 1636 ravaged by Saxon and imperial troops. Franz Adam von Waldstein sold the reign large scal 1821 to Johann Anton Lexa Aehrenthal.

The population of the village of Skala Hrubá remained insignificant. It is the starting point to the west of the village lying large scaler rock city.

The municipality consists of the villages Skala Hrubá Bohuslav ( Bohuslaw ), Borek, Doubravice ( Doubrawitz ) Hnanice ( Hnanitz ) Hruba Skala ( United Skal ), Krčkovice ( Kretschkowitz ) Rokytnice ( Rokitnitz ) and Želejov ( Schellejow ). Basic settlement units are Bohuslav, Borek, Hnanice, Hruba Skala and Krčkovice.

The municipality is divided into the Katastralbezirke Hnanice pod Troskami and Hruba Skala.
