Hryhoriy Surkis
Hryhorij Mychajlowytsch Surkis (Ukrainian Григорій Михайлович Суркіс; Russian Григорий Суркис, Grigory Surkis, born September 4, 1949 in Odessa) is a Ukrainian industrialist and sports official. Surkis was from 2000 until September 2012 President of the Ukrainian Football Federation " Federazija Futbolu Ukrajiny " ( FFU). He is also a member of the UEFA Executive Committee and Chairman of the National Team Competitions Committee and vice chairman of the Commission for stadiums and security in the UEFA. Surkis played, especially in the 1990s a significant role in Ukrainian politics.
Life
Surkis was responsible for organizing the 2012 European Football Championship, which took place in parallel in the Ukraine and Poland in Ukraine.
Hryhorij Surkis, a trained engineer and billionaire today, now belongs to the small group of powerful oligarchs in Ukraine. From 1975 to 1991 Surkis was still working for the normal content of only a few hundred rubles in the construction department of the city administration of the capital Kiev, most recently as director of housing Combine. After the independence of Ukraine (1991 ), he made a career and invested with money of unknown origin in petroleum, agriculture and banking.
In 1993, Surkis bought his favorite football club Dynamo Kiev, which he was president until 1998; Since then the club is run by brother Ihor. 1995 the two brothers, the Spanish referee Lopez Nieto tried to bribe with expensive fur coats for a European Cup game of the association. Surkis was a long time the leaders of the so-called " Kiev clan ", an influential network of several Ukrainian industrialist. In March 1998 he was elected a member of the United Socialist Party of Ukraine (social demokratytschna partija Ukrajiny ) elected to the Verkhovna Rada. In 1999, he supported the re-election campaign of then-President Leonid Kuchma, the same year he was a candidate in Kiev for the office of mayor, but lost this election with only 17 percent of the vote despite clearly an intensive advertising campaign.
As president of the industrial and financial group " Slavutych ", a closed joint stock company with the core areas of energy supply, processing of agricultural products and investment projects, he takes today as principal owner of TV channels influence on the Ukrainian media world. Before the presidential elections in 1999, Surkis controlled a quarter of the regional power company. Surkis was also in the reign of President Viktor Yushchenko as one of the most influential men in the Ukraine.
