Study and career

In 1980 he was elected mayor of the city -administered Tianjin. At the same time he was until 1982 secretary of the Party committee of the city.

Ascent to the member of the Standing Committee and loss of power

At the 13th Congress of the CPC in 1987, he was also elected a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China. He rose to leadership in the closest circle of heads of state and party leadership. After the death of the former reform-minded General Secretary of the CCP, Hu Yaobang on 15 April 1989 and the fall of its also applicable as a reformer successor Zhao Ziyang, however, Hu Qili lost these influential offices due to its equally open attitude towards the student movement of the Tiananmen Square massacre of June 1989.

Since 1998 he has been Chairman of the Song Qingling Foundation, the Chinese Welfare Foundation.
