Hub-center steering

The steering wheel hub is a rare and unusual design of the front suspension on motorcycles, in which the steering or rotation axis is in the center of the wheel. The steering wheel hub can be expected in the broadest sense to the group of Ackermann steering.

History

The first steering wheel hub is from the American designer Carl A. Neracher that of 1921-1926 einbaute this in his motorbike model Ner -a-Car in larger numbers. After the French manufacturer Majestic followed ( 1928-1934 ). From 1968, the British designer Jack DiFazio offered a self-developed a conversion kit Steering wheel hubs for street bikes and race bikes; became known as the " Nessie ".

The Italian manufacturer Bimota delivered from 1991 to his motorcycle Bimota Tesi 1D model a steering wheel hub after DiFazio system. In subsequent models 2D and 3D Bimota produced in small series the DiFazio - hub steering up today for interested customers. Technology

The steering wheel hub, the wheel rotates a steering pivot pin in the axle center. During the steering process, the wheel is a lever which acts on the wheel support to rotate the steering shaft. Already at the Ner -a-Car, the low steering was criticized. When DiFazio steering a highly complicated system of levers with two push rods ( 1D system ) and reversing levers is made the steering movement. The maximum steering angle of the steering wheel hub DiFazio (19 degrees) over conventional telescopic forks ( about 30 degrees ) is significantly lower; the brake dive compensation is considerably larger than in the front forks. Due to the complicated (and also high-maintenance ) lever system in considerable disadvantages in terms of driving stability result.
