Hubert Houben (historian)

Hubert Houben ( born February 4, 1953 in Heinberg ) is a German - Italian medieval historian.

Life

After studying Hubert Houben his doctorate in 1978 at the Albert- Ludwigs- University of Freiburg in Medieval Latin. From 1980 to 1983 he was Feodor Lynen Research Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the Institute for medieval and modern history of the Università del Salento in Lecce, where he thereafter has been working as a lecturer of German language and literature until 1988. After further research grants from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and a Senior Visiting Research Fellow at St. John 's College, Oxford, he habilitated in 1992 at the University of Paderborn and was until 1994 professore associato at the University of Bologna, then to 2001 at the University of Lecce. Since 2001 he is full professor there of Medieval History at the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences.

His research fields are the history of the European Middle Ages, with special consideration of the southern Italian and German history, the history of the medieval church with an emphasis on monasticism and orders of chivalry, Emperor Frederick II and the castles in southern Italy, medieval city of history and intercultural relations in the Mediterranean.

Since 1988, Hubert Houben has Italian citizenship, he is married and has one daughter.
