Hubert Leitgeb

Hubert Leitgeb was a policeman and lived in Antholz. He began 1984 with the sport of biathlon and was active for the Centro Sportivo Carabinieri. Since the mid- 1980s he was active in the Biathlon World Cup. First major event was the Biathlon World Championships 1989 in Feistritz an der Drau, where the Italian was used in singles and reached the 14th place. In 1990 he was in Minsk 34 of the Single Page and at Holmenkollen in Oslo with Andreas Zingerle, Johann Gottlieb Taschler Passler and ninth in the team race. In 1991 he won at the Lahti World Cup together with Taschler, Simon Demetz and Wilfried Pallhuber the gold medal in the team race. In the 1991/92 season he reached in a single in Novosibirsk behind Wolfgang Perner and Sylfest Glimsdal finishing third his first result on the World Cup podium. He played the next race at the 1992 Winter Olympic Games in Albertville. At the races Saisies Leitgeb was 26 and missed the sprint with Passler, Pieralberto Carrara and Zingerle in fourth place just a medal.

The Olympic Games in 1994 in Lillehammer missed Leitgeb, but shortly thereafter he won in Canmore with a single his only World Cup race. In the simultaneous World Cup, in which the non-Olympic races were held, he again won the title with Pieralberto Carrara, Zingerle and Pallhuber. In the Biathlon World Championships 1995 in his hometown of Antholz Leitgeb was used only in the relay race, missed here in fourth place on the side of Pallhuber, Patrick Favre and Carrara only just a medal. Better ran the Biathlon World Championships 1996 in Ruhpolding. In the team race he won in the relay occupation of the previous year behind the representations of Belarus and Russia the bronze medal. In individual he missed in fourth place just another medal. The last time at a World Cup came Leitgeb 1997 Osrblie used, where he finished tenth of the team race with Helmuth Messner, Enrico Tach and Carrara. Last major event was the Olympic Games in Nagano in 1998. Leitgeb came only in the sprint used, in which it was 35th. After the season, he finished his career, and was for five years initially biathlon coach. Since the Biathlon World Championships 2007 in his home Antholz Leitgeb was race director of the local biathlon race. He was a member of the Technical Committee of the IMU.

Leitgeb died at the age of 46 years in an avalanche near Antholz at the Staller Sattel. He leaves behind his wife and two children.
