Hubert Markl

Hubert Markl ( born August 17, 1938 in Regensburg ) is a German zoologist and ethologist. From June 1996 to June 2002 he was President of the Max Planck Society. An important merit of his activity is the processing of the operations within the Kaiser Wilhelm Society during the period of National Socialism.

Career

After studying biology, chemistry and geography in Munich Hubert Markl 1962 at the Ludwig -Maximilians -Universität München Dr. rer. nat. professional doctorate in zoology. It postdoctoral studies at Harvard University and the Rockefeller University, and in 1967 the Habilitation in Zoology at the University of Frankfurt am Main, with the theme of communication behavior of social insects.

From 1968 to 1973 Hubert Markl was Professor and Director of the Zoological Institute of the Technical University of Darmstadt. From 1974 he was professor of biology at the University of Konstanz. His successor in 1997, Axel Meyer. From 1977 to 1983, Markl Vice President of the German Research Foundation ( DFG) and from 1986 to 1991 its president. He became president of the newly founded Berlin- Brandenburg Academy of Sciences in 1993. From June 1996 to June 2002 he was President of the Max Planck Society. Since 1985 he is a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. Markl from 1998 to 2003 Member of the Supervisory Board of Siemens AG. Markl is also an honorary member of the Max Planck Society.

Markl lives in Konstanz; He is married and has a son, and geoscientists Gregor Markl, who teaches at the University of Tübingen.
