Hubert Reeves

Hubert Reeves, CC, OQ ( born July 13, 1932 in Montréal / Québec ) is a Canadian nuclear and astrophysicist and popular science author.

Biography

Reeves studied after visiting the Collège Jean de Brébeuf 1950-1953 Physics at the University of Montreal. In 1955 he graduated from McGill University under John David Jackson a master's degree in nuclear physics and his doctorate in 1960 at Cornell University under Edwin Salpeter in astrophysics.

From 1960 to 1964 Reeves taught as an assistant professor physics at the Université de Montréal. He was also an advisor to the Institute for Space Studies at NASA and taught at Columbia University. After that, he was a professor of nuclear physics at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. In 1965 he became director of the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS ) in Paris and scientific advisor of the Commissariat à l' Energie Atomique in Saclay.

Reeves worked scientifically about the thermonuclear processes inside stars and the formation of light elements such as helium, lithium, beryllium and boron With numerous books and films, he contributed to the popularization of knowledge of astronomy and cosmology at.

In addition to several honorary doctorates Reeves was, among other things the Petrie Prize Lecture, the price of the Fondation de France (1982 ) and the Société Française de Physique (1985 ) and the Albert Einstein Medal ( 2001) awarded. He was a Knight of the Ordre national du Mérite (1976 ), Ritter ( 1985) and Commander ( 2003) of the Légion d' Honneur and officer (1991) and Compagnon (2003 ) of the Ordre du Canada.

In addition to his scientific work, Reeves is also in the field of environmental protection actively, including as president of the Ligue ROC pour la faune sauvage de la Preservation and a member of Terre d' avenir and France Nature Environnement.
