Hubert Ries

Hubert Ries ( born April 1, 1802 in Bonn, † September 14, 1886 in Berlin) was a German violinist and composer. He was the brother of Ferdinand Ries.

Biography

Hubert Ries is the youngest son of the violinist and music director Franz Anton Ries Electoral Cologne. He received his training from his father, and later in Kassel by Louis Spohr and Moritz Hauptmann. Here he had in common with Ferdinand David instruction. In 1824 he was employed at the royal theater in Berlin as an orchestra conductor and one year later entered into the local royal chapel.

After he had acquired through since 1833, organized by him quartet concerts in the special favor of the Berlin audience, he was in 1836 appointed royal concertmaster and 1839 as a member of the Academy of Arts.

During this time he developed a very fruitful teaching, which he continued even after his retirement took place in the 1870s. He died on 14 September 1886 in Berlin.

Work

As a composer Ries has done in the pedagogical area of importance; his violin school for the first lesson ( published in English translation ), his violin studies at a moderate difficulty as well as the twelve violin studies in the form of concert are pieces of high and lasting value.
