Huddersfield Narrow Canal

The Huddersfield Narrow Canal connects, over a distance of 35 kilometers, the Huddersfield Broad Canal at Huddersfield town with the Ashton Canal at Ashton under Lyne in England and has 74 locks. The canal was proposed in 1793 at a meeting in the George Hotel in Huddersfield. Construction began in 1794 and the canal was opened on 4 April 1811. The transport of goods and commodities carried in special narrow but up to 22m long so-called narrowboats because of the channel dimensions. The decommissioning of the channel was 1944; yet it has been restored and is open since 2001 completely for boat traffic.

A special feature is that the channel under the foundations of a power pylon running through it. The Huddersfield Narrow Canal runs through the 5209 meter long Standedge Tunnel. This partly with brick -lined tunnel is the longest and highest canal tunnel in Britain.
