Huddinge Municipality

Huddinge is a comune ( municipality ) in the Swedish Stockholm County and the historic province of Södermanland. The main town of the municipality is Huddinge.

In the village live about 87,500 people, but more than half of the 131 km ² area is covered with farmland, forests and lakes. The municipality comprises the living quarters ( Bostadsområden ) Flemingsberg, Segeltorp Sjödalen - Fullersta, Skogås, Stuvsta - Snättringe, Trångsund and Vårby. Much of the population lives in houses, but in the vicinity of railway stations there are centers with multi-family homes. Of economic importance is the shopping center Kungens kurva with Sweden's largest IKEA market and the entertainment center Heron City, and since 2006, with Sweden's first media market.

History

The name probably comes from the Huddinge ethnic group of the " Uddungar " who inhabited a promontory of the Lake Mälaren here. These were often attacked from the lake from other ethnic groups. To warn the allies Uddungar inflamed campfire on high places. Today, these fires are mapped in the municipal coat of arms. Some ruins of prehistoric protection castles, and various rune stones can be visited in the community.

Before the construction of the railway line in 1860 Huddinge was dominated by agricultural homesteads. By train also some industrial enterprises settled.

Every year in May, the Jazz Days of Huddinge take place in which mainly occur Swedish artists. In the community there are seven nature reserves in which forests and rare flowers are protected.
