Huedin
Huedin (Hungarian Banffyhunyad, German Heynod ) is a town in the district of Cluj in Transylvania, Romania.
Geographical location
Huedin is located in the Apuseni Mountains ( part of the Romanian Western Carpathians ) and is surrounded by the villages Nearşova, Domoşu and Horlacea. Located on the train Budapest - Oradea - Cluj- Napoca Bucharest and European Route 60 to Huedin located 50 kilometers north- west of the district capital of Cluj- Napoca ( Cluj ).
Population
2002 were registered in Huedin 9439 people. 58.45 % were Romanians, 32.49 % Hungarians and 8.97 % were Roma ( part of it Rudari ). Furthermore, three German and one Romanian Slovak and Ukrainian registered. The number of Roma is constantly increasing (there are sedentary " Hutzigeuner ", of which some have brought considerable wealth to it ).
History
Huedin was founded in the Middle Ages, 1330-1848 it was owned by the family of the Bánffy, which is indicated also by the Hungarian name of the city. 1910 were 90.5 % of the population (then 5194 ) Hungarian, the proportion of Jews was 20.7 %. In terms of religion presented Calvinists 57.5 % of the city population.
Lately Huedin developed as a starting point ecotourism trips.
Attractions
- The Reformed Church, with a low tower, whose choir was built in 1483 has six featured windows and is a listed building.
- The Romanian Orthodox Church, the former Greek Catholic, was built from 1907 to 1910.
