Hugh, Count of Champagne

Hugh I of Champagne (French: Hugues, † June 14, 1126 in Palestine) was since 1093 Count of Troyes Vitry and Bar-sur -Aube out of the house Blois.

He was the youngest of three sons of Count Theobald III. of Blois ( Theobald I of Meaux -Troyes, † 1089 ) from his third marriage to Adela of Crépy.

Life

Hugo inherited in 1093 by his brother Odo III. the counties of Troyes Vitry and Bar-sur- Aube, which included a large part of the Champagne region. In 1102 Hugo therefore took the title of " Count of Champagne" ( comes Campania ), which he passed on to his successors.

In 1125 he resigned, handed over the inheritance to his nephew Theobald IV of Blois and entered the Knights Templar in the Holy Land. But Theobald did not accept the title of Count of Champagne, but was limited to the Count of Blois.

Marriage and issue

Hugo married between 1093 and the November 28, 1095 Constance of France ( probably * 1078, † between 1124 and January 1126 ), daughter of King Philip I and Bertha of Holland. The marriage was in 1104 - because of childlessness - divorced. Konstanze 's second marriage was the Crusader Prince Bohemond of Taranto.

His second wife Isabella married in 1110 Hugo of Burgundy, daughter of Count Stephen of Burgundy, called the " madcap " ( Tête Hardi ). She came only after thirteen years of marriage, in 1123, was called a son of Odo down.
