Hugh Coveney

Hugh Coveney (Irish Aodh Ó Cómhanaigh; born July 20, 1935 † 15 March 1998) was an Irish politician of the Fine Gael.

Biography

His own political career began in 1981 as a candidate of the Fine Gael with the first election for deputies ( Teachta Dala ) of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ). There he first represented the constituency of Cork South - Central, first lost his seat in March 1982. Already in December 1982, however, he was re-elected as MPs. After a further term loss due to the electoral defeat of 1987, he was elected only at a by-election ( By- Election ) on 10 November 1994 back to the members of the Dáil and represented there until his death in his old constituency of Cork South - Central.

Just one month after his re-entry into the House of Commons he was appointed by Taoiseach (Prime Minister ) John Bruton as Minister of Defense and Navy on 15 December 1994. After almost a half year tenure, he resigned from this office back on 23 May 1995 and was on the following day instead Minister of State Minister of Finance. This office he held until finally the end of Brutos term of office on 26 June 1997. During the election made ​​necessary by his death, his son Simon Coveney was elected to the House of Commons.
