Hugh de Vere, 4th Earl of Oxford

Hugh de Vere, 4th Earl of Oxford (c. 1210; † December 1263 ) was the only child of Robert and de Vere, 3rd Earl of Oxford. When his father died in 1221, he inherited the county as well as the office of Lord Great Chamberlain. His mother Isabel de Bolebec took over the guardianship of him. Hugh did homage to the king for his county in 1231, around the same time he was knighted.

For his most important possession, Hedingham Castle in Essex, he was granted the right to hold a market in the accompanying village. In addition, here he founded a nunnery. Hugh de Vere married Hawise de Quincy, daughter of Saer de Quincy, 1st Earl of Winchester and Margaret de Beaumont. When he died in 1263, his son Robert de Vere, 5th Earl of Oxford followed him.
