Hugh Edwin Strickland

Hugh Edwin Strickland ( born March 2, 1811 in Righton, Yorkshire, † September 14, 1853 near Retford, Nottinghamshire ) was an English geologist, ornithologist and taxonomist.

Strickland studied at Oxford. In 1835 he accompanied the English geologist John William Hamilton ( 1805-1867 ) on his journey to the Orient, and published as a result of this trip: Bibliographia zoologiae et geologiae (London 1847-54 ) and The Dodo and its kindred (London, 1848).

Later he supported as a professor of geology at Oxford Roderick Murchison in the preparatory work for the stratigraphy of the Silurian.

He was co-founder in 1844 of the Ray Society.
