Hugh IV of Cyprus

Hugo IV (* 1294, † October 10, 1359 ) was King of Cyprus from 1324 to 1359 and as Hugh II titular King of Jerusalem.

He was the son of Guy of Cyprus and Eschiva of Ibelin, Lady of Beirut. In 1324 he succeeded his paternal uncle, King Henry II of Cyprus, on the throne. He seems to have been content with the rule on Cyprus and not tried to reconquer the kingdom of Jerusalem. He even held his son Peter I from having to go to Europe to get support for a new crusade.

He participated in 1344 and 1345 in the Alliance of the Republic of Venice and the Knights of St. John of Rhodes in attacks on the Turks and their war fleet in western Asia Minor. At the victories at Smyrna in 1344 and Imbros 1345 he was involved.

Marriage and issue

He married twice, both times women out of the house Ibelin:

1307 or 1310 he married his first wife, Mary of Ibelin ( † before June 1318 ), daughter of Guy of Ibelin († 1304), Titulargraf of Jaffa. With her he had at least one son:

  • Guy of Lusignan († 1343 ), Constable of Cyprus ( 1336-1338 ) and Titularfürst of Galilee

On June 18, 1318 he married his second wife, Alice of Ibelin († 1386 ), daughter of another Guy of Ibelin († 1308), Seneschal of Cyprus. With her he had at least four children:

  • Eschiva of Lusignan († 1363) ∞ Ferdinand of Majorca († 1345 ), Infante of Majorca, Viscount of Aumelas;
  • Peter of Lusignan († 1369 ) was followed by Hugo as King of Cyprus and Jerusalem;
  • John of Lusignan († 1375 ), Regent of Cyprus and Titularfürst of Antioch;
  • James of Lusignan († 1398 ) King of Cyprus and Jerusalem.

In addition, Hugo had the following children in whom is unclear which of his two wives whose mother is:

  • Thomas de Lusignan († 1340);
  • Perrot of Lusignan († 1353 );
  • Margaret of Lusignan ∞ 1348 Walter de Dampierre ( † after 1373 ) Seneschal of Cyprus.
