Hugh M. Rigney

Hugh McPheeters Rigney ( born July 31, 1873 in Arthur, Moultrie County, Illinois, † October 12, 1950 in Springfield, Illinois ) was an American politician. Between 1937 and 1939 he represented the state of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Hugh Rigney attended the common schools and then completed an apprenticeship in the printing trade, where he later worked as a journeyman. Between 1900 and 1925 he was a newspaper editor in his home town of Arthur. In the years 1910 and 1911 Rigney was there also city treasurer; 1910 to 1916 he was a member of the local school board. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party. Between 1930 and 1934, and again in 1942 he served as the district chairman in Moultrie County. From 1935 to 1937 he sat as an MP in the House of Representatives from Illinois.

In the congressional elections of 1936 Rigney was in the 19th electoral district of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Donald C. Dobbins on January 3, 1937. Since he has not been confirmed in 1938, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until January 3, 1939. During this time there issued additional New Deal legislation of the Federal Government under President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Between 1939 and 1943, Hugh Rigney worked in the real estate industry. Since 15 September 1943, he was employed in the office of the Secretary of State of Illinois. There he remained until his death on 12 October 1950.
