Hugh Montefiore

Hugh William Montefiore ( born May 12, 1920 in London as William Hugh Sebag - Montefiore, † 13 May 2005) was Bishop of Kingston upon Thames and later bishop of Birmingham.

Life

He was the great- grandnephew of Moses Montefiore and comes from a famous Jewish family.

During his education at Rugby School, he converted to Christianity Anglican. He was then to 1970 Vicar at the Church of St Mary the Great, Cambridge, and then to 1978 Bishop of Kingston.

As early as 1977 he was Bishop of Birmingham until 1987. During his ecclesiastical career, he wrote more than 20 books. From 1984 to 1987 he was also as a spiritual Lord Member of the House of Lords. He was also a Friend of the Earth.
