Hugh of Saint-Cher

Hugh of Saint- Cher (* 1200 in Saint -Cher ( Dauphiné ), † 19 March 1263 in Orvieto; French Hugues de Saint -Cher, lat Hugo de Sancto Caro ) was Dominican, cardinal, diplomat and adviser of Gregory IX. and Innocent IV, as well as one of the most influential commentators of the Middle Ages.

Life

In Paris, Hugo studied theology, philosophy and jurisprudence. His career began in 1225 when he joined the Dominican order. Already in 1227 he is provincial of his order in France before 1230 prior of the Abbey of St. Jacques in Paris.

Gregory IX. makes him in 1233 to his ambassador in Constantinople Opel. Charged by Pope Innocent IV in 1244 for Cardinal priest of Santa Sabina, he takes the following year in the First Council of Lyons. After the death of Frederick II, he is an envoy of the Holy Roman Empire.
