Hugh Ragin

Hugh Ragin ( born April 9, 1951 in Houston, Texas) is an American trumpeter (trumpet, piccolo trumpet, flugelhorn ) of the Creative Jazz.

Life and work

Ragin grew up in his native town and began playing the trumpet, with which he toured the UK as a teenager in the Houston All-City High School Orchestra. After completing his bachelor's degree in music education at the University of Houston and the master 's degree in trumpet playing at Colorado State University, he took in 1978 in a workshop in Woodstock at Roscoe Mitchell and worked in the following year in Germany at Mitchell and Wadada Leo Smith, joined with them on the Moers Jazz Festival and then toured with Anthony Braxton.

1980 began his long association with David Murray, as he played with cellist Abdul Wadud and bassist Fred Hopkins in Murray's drum-less quartet ( The People 's Choice ). Ragin can be heard also on Murray albums such as Picasso (DIW, 1992), Dark Star (1996 ) and Speaking In toungues ( Enja, 1998). In addition, the trumpeter played between 1991-96 at Murray's big band projects such as David Murray Big Band Conducted by Lawrence " Butch" Morris ( 1991) or South of the Border by 1992.

In 1981, Ragin was instrumental in the recording of Anthony Braxton's Composition 98, 1982, he played with bassist John Lindberg Duo (Team Work), 1983, he went with Maynard Ferguson's band on tour. In 1984 he recorded his first album under his own name, Metaphysical Question in trio with John Lindberg and percussionist Thurman Barker on the independent jazz label CECMA. During this time, Ragin also participated in recordings of John Lindberg's big band projects ( Trilogy of Works for Eleven Instrumentalists, 1984). In 1987, he performed with Roscoe Mitchell to the New York Knitting Factory and worked on his ECM album Nine to Get Ready with. In the 1990s, Ragin was - outside of its activities at Murray - on projects by Butch Morris, Fred Wesley and pianist DD Jackson ( Paired Down) involved.

Ragin teaches at Oberlin College.
