Hugh Sutherland (ice hockey)

Hugh Robert Sutherland ( born February 2, 1907 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, † September 9, 1990 ) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. In the 1932 Olympics he won the gold medal as a member of the Canadian national team.

Career

Hugh Sutherland began his career as a hockey player at youth level with the Millionaires, for which he was active from 1922 to 1927. Then he ran for Winnipeg Grain Exchange on the senior positions before becoming in 1929 the Winnipeg Hockey Club joined. In the 1930/31 season he won with the Winnipeg Hockey Club the Allan Cup, the Canadian Amateur Championship. At the Winter Games in 1932, he represented Canada at the Winnipeg Hockey Club. Following the tournament he played three years for the Selkirk Fishermen and included a year for the Winnipeg Brokers, before he ended his career in 1937. In 2004, he was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame.

Internationally

For Canada, Sutherland took part in the 1932 Olympics in Lake Placid, where he won the gold medal with his team.
