Hugh Thomas (writer)

Hugh Swynnerton Thomas, Baron Thomas of Swynnerton (born 21 October 1931 in Windsor ), is a British historian.

Thomas studied at the Sorbonne in Paris, and graduated at Queens ' College ( Cambridge ) with a Bachelor of Arts. From 1966 to 1975 he was Professor of History at the University of Reading. From 1979 to 1991 he was the director of London's " Centre for Policy Studies ," and at the same time a political adviser to the Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. 1981 Thomas was raised by Queen Elizabeth II for Life peer as Baron Thomas of Swynnerton in Notting Hill, Greater London. He is also awarded the Grand Cross of the Knight of the Spanish Orden de Isabel La Católica.

Written research work focus of Thomas was a comprehensive work on the Spanish Civil War and the historical and political developments in Cuba since the earliest colonial times to the Cuban Revolution and the subsequent communist period, as well as work on the Latin - Central American region. Through his contributions to British and European presence Thomas is considered to be pro-European.

For his work on the Spanish Civil War Hugh Thomas in 1962 with the prestigious Somerset Maugham Award - Prize for Literature.
