Hugh Willoughby

Sir Hugh Willoughby († 1554 in the mouth of the Warsina ) was an English officer and expedition leader. He was the first Western Europeans, who sought the Northeast Passage.

Life

Looking for a safe haven for urgent repair work, the ships sailed again to the southwest as far as the Murman coast. In the mouth of the Warsina the ships dropped anchor. Willoughby was forced to winter here, after which he was insufficiently prepared. Then he took no log, is over the next few months, almost nothing is known. A later paper found evidence that Willoughby and most of his men were still alive in January, but when Russian fishermen found the ships in the spring of 1554, none of the 62 men lived longer. The cause of death from hunger, cold and scurvy were adopted at that time. Much, however, suggests that men have died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Richard Chancellor reached the Edward Bonaventure White sea, left his ship back there, traveled to Moscow and opened a new trade route.
