Hughie Gallacher

Hugh Kilpatrick " Hughie " Gallacher ( born February 2, 1903 in Motherwell, † 11 June 1957, Gateshead ) was a Scottish football player.

Life

The small forward was known for his muscular appearance and talent, but there were also negative sides to the Scots. He was denounced as very arrogant and as a hothead. Gallacher played 19 times for the Scottish national football team, scoring 22 goals, ie a ratio of more than one goal per game. Gallacher's first club was FC Queen of the South of Dumfries. 1921 after a year in Dumfries, he joined FC Airdrieonians, with whom he won the Scottish Cup. In 1925 he moved to Newcastle United in England. He immediately became captain of the English, with the Magpies, he was English champion. In 1930 it went further south to Chelsea, where he remained until 1935. After staying in London he played with four different clubs for a year, the clubs were: Derby County, Notts County, Grimsby Town FC and Gateshead. Overall, the Scot scored 387 goals in 541 official matches.

Gallacher's life took a tragic end in 1957 when he committed suicide on train tracks in Gateshead. The next day he would have had to appear due to alleged ill-treatment of his son in court.
