Hugo Achúgar

Hugo Achugar ( born January 23, 1944 in Montevideo, Uruguay) is an Uruguayan writer, literary essayist and lecturer.

Achugar ended 1969 successfully completed a training at the Instituto de Profesores Artigas (IPA). The following year he received a scholarship from the French government. In 1980, he earned a Ph.D. in Latin American literature at the University of Pittsburgh. Latin American Literature, he taught then also at the Faculty of Humanities and Education ( FHCE ) of the Universidad de la República ( UdelaR ). From 1975 to 1983 he worked at several Venezuelan universities. Then had Achugar, who also worked in Brazil and Spain as a visiting professor, 1983-1990 a teaching post in the United States at Northwestern University held. In 1994, he received another scholarship from the Catédra Simón Bolívar at the USP in Brazil. He also conducted research at the Fundación Centro de Estudios Latinoamericanos Rómulo Gallegos ( Celarg ). From 1999 to 2003 he was Director of the Cultural Policy Program of the Rockefeller Foundation at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Latin American Studies of the Universidad de la República. Achugar teaches at the University of Miami. Presently ( 2012) he is National Director of Culture (Director Nacional de Cultura ) in Uruguay.

Achugar wrote in addition to numerous works of poetry and essays, two novels, which he published under the heteronym Juana Caballero. Achugar was honored for his literary works in many cases. He received the 1996 Premio Bartolomé Hidalgo La biblioteca en ruinas, but was also with prices of the Uruguayan Ministry of Education and Culture ( MEC), the Feria Nacional de Libros y Grabados and Intendency Municipal of Montevideo considered.
