Hugo Hirst, 1st Baron Hirst

Hugo Hirst (* November 26, 1863 in Old City ( Iller ) as Hugo Hirsch, † January 22, 1943 in Foxhill, near Reading as Hugo Hirst, 1st Baron Hirst of Witton ) was a British entrepreneur.

Life

Hugo Hirsch was the eldest son of the merchant, Emanuel Hirsch and his wife Lisa from house No. 36, owner of a distillery. Hugo spent his childhood in Munich in 1870 and emigrated in 1881 to England, where he was naturalized in 1883 and the name " Hirst " accepted.

In 1886 he joined with Gustav Binswanger (later Byng ), the London- electrical wholesaler G. Binswanger and Company had, and the company was renamed The General Electric Apparatus Company. The next year they released their first electric catalog. In 1888 they acquired a factory in Salford near Manchester, where she produced phones, electric bells and switches.

1889, the company was as General Electric Company Ltd.. ( G.E.C. ) registered. They developed the use of porcelain as insulation material in switches. After 1893 they went into the production of incandescent lamps. The resulting company was founded in 1909 Osram.

On 30 May 1892 he married his cousin Leontine Hirsch, the daughter of Herman Hirsch. Her sister Amanda married his employee Max Railing. In 1906 he was Managing Director and in 1910, when Byng had died, he was Chairman. He supported 1923 Pinchas Rutenberg in founding the Palestine Electric Company.

From 1928 to 1930 he was master at the Glaziers ' Company. On June 28, 1934, he was appointed 1st Baron Hirst of Witton ( co. Warwick ).
