The Hugo - Treffner Gymnasium ( Estonian Hugo Treffneri gümnaasium ) in Tartu is one of the most prestigious educational institutions in Estonia. Many famous Estonians have stored there her high school diploma from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.

19th century

The Estonian educator and intellectuals Hugo Treffner received on 7 December 1883, permission establishing the boys' school. The teaching was taken on January 1, 1884. Initially, only the three lowest classes of the high school were taught.

Language of instruction was German, the traditional language of education in Estonia. Already in 1889, however, was introduced Russian as a language school in the sign of the imposed by the Tsarist Russification of Estonia. 1890, the school was expanded to eight classes.

20th century

In 1907 the school officially named Hugo Treffners and became a private school. After the death Treffners 1912, his widow took over the management of the school. From 1917 to 1940 her relative Konstantin Treffner headed the school. With the acquisition of Estonian Estonian independence in 1918 was introduced as a language of instruction from the fall. Especially before the Second World War, the Hugo Treffner high school was one of the leading elite schools and education forging of the country.

With the Soviet occupation of Estonia, the name Hugo Treffner been deleted. The school was called henceforth " IV Middle School " from 1944 " I. Middle School ". In 1954, the co-education was introduced and girls admitted to school.

With restoration of Estonian independence in 1990, the school was again awarded its historical name. Since 1998, only the last three classes are taught before graduation ( grades 10 to 12).
