History

The architectural history of the castle probably dates back to the early 12th century. At this time, an artificial hill was built on a marsh island on which a residential tower was built of wood. Beginning of the 13th century, the wooden residential tower was replaced by a circular tower of tufa, of which the remains are preserved in the wall of the main castle. The principal remaining parts of the building date from the 14th to 17th centuries. At the beginning of the Eighty Years' War Huis Bergh had repeatedly taken a lot of damage. In 1735 the castle was destroyed by fire.

In 1912, the textile manufacturer and art collector January Herman van Heek ( 1873-1957 ) acquired from Enschede the castle. Another fire occurred in 1939. Reconstruction work began in 1939 and were completed in 1941.
