Human parainfluenza viruses

Parainfluenza is caused by various Human parainfluenza viruses of the family Paramyxoviridae. The virus released from flu-like symptoms. The infection rate in children up to ten years is 90 %. The viruses are spread worldwide. Transmission is by droplet infection. Parainfluenza can draw a superinfection by itself. The course of infection is highly dependent on the disposition and constitution. Parainfluenza viruses are found in four serotypes.

Parainfluenza viruses are the main causative agent of croup.

Parainfluenza viruses are also relevant in veterinary medicine, including as a pathogen in kennel cough complex.
