Human placental lactogen

The human placental lactogen (HPL, Eng. Placental lactogen or human Chorionic somatomammotropin hormones, CSH) is a hormone that is secreted by the syncytiotrophoblast during pregnancy. The structure and function similar to the somatotropin, a growth hormone.

The protein consists of 191 amino acids with two intramolecular disulfide bonds, and has a molecular mass of 22,304 Da.

HPL modifies the metabolism of the mother during pregnancy. By HPL the maternal cells become less sensitive to insulin, as a result increases the mother's blood sugar levels. Thus, the fetal supply can be ensured.
