Hummel (Instrument)

The bumblebee is one of Scherr zither related stringed instrument from the family of Bordunzithern in which the melody strings are pressed down with the left index finger or a game rod, thereby pulling the right hand a plate or a quill on the melody and drone strings. The resonance of the drone is reminiscent of the humming of bumblebees; bourdon the French word meaning " bumblebee ". Also a Dudelsackart with drones, the Hümmelchen, takes its name thereof.

The Hummel was particularly widespread as folk instrument in northern Germany. In Holland and North Frisia under the name " Hommel " - as an instrument since 1508 - already in use.
