Humor Monastery

Humor Monastery is a Romanian Orthodox convent and is located about 5 km north of the town of Gura Humorului in Romania. The monastery church " Adormirea Maicii Domnului " was included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1993 together with other churches in Moldavia.

History

In 1530 the Chancellor Teodor Moldovan Bubuiog let the present church built on the site of a monastery complex dating back to 1415. The church was one of the first painted churches in today's Romania. The frescoes are by the artist Toma of Suceava. Among the most famous works of art in the church is a picture of Stephen the Great. The square tower was erected in 1641 under the reign of Vasile Lupu. The monastery houses a valuable collection of icons.
