Humphrey Stafford, 1st Duke of Buckingham

By the early death of his father he inherited already as a small child the title of Earl of Stafford and associated, widely distributed lands. In 1421 he was knighted.

Humphrey was from 1430 to 1432 as a lieutenant general for his king Henry VI. active in Normandy and was rewarded for his services in 1431 with the title of Count of Perche. Henry VI. followed the strategy here, many Englishmen to transfer in occupied France lands and titles to even more strongly bind to itself.

On September 14, 1444 Humphrey was appointed Duke of Buckingham. From 1450 to 1459 he was Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports.

Humphrey had before October 18 1424Anne Neville in Raby, Durham married. She was the daughter of Ralph Neville, 1st Earl of Westmorland and his wife Joan Beaufort, Countess of Westmoreland. Anne had no fewer than 13 siblings ( including her younger sister, Cecily Neville, the future wife of Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York, and mother of the later kings Edward IV and Richard III. ) And 10 half-siblings, so that the family background of the Staffords and their influence considerably extended by this marriage policy. The defeat of Northampton suffered Humphrey, however, against a nephew of his wife, Richard Neville. The marriage between Humphrey and Anne sprang ten children.
