Hungarian National Gallery

The Hungarian National Gallery (Hungarian: Magyar Nemzeti Galeria) in the Hungarian capital Budapest has the most extensive collection of Hungarian art from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Founded in 1957, put together by the outsourced departments of the Museum of Fine Arts, and various municipal and private collections.

Housed the Hungarian National Gallery is now in three wings of the castle palace on Castle Hill in Budapest. By 1957, the exhibits and works of art were housed tér in the former Palace of Justice on Kossuth where the Ethnographic Museum is located.

Distribution of exhibitions

Housed in Budapest Buda Castle National Gallery extends into three main wings over four floors.

The collection of the National Gallery includes, inter alia:

  • Gothic art. This is particularly the marble sculpture of the head of the king of Hungary, Béla III. worth mentioning.
  • Late Gothic altarpieces
  • Renaissance and Baroque Art
  • Art of the 19th century. Here the paintings of Mihály Munkácsy are particularly worth seeing, which is attributed to the Hungarian realism and is one of the most important Hungarian artists.
  • Art of the 20th century with many representatives of the Hungarian Secession

Ground floor

On the ground floor you will find, among other medieval sculptures, Gothic sculptures and panel paintings.

Of particular note are the medieval stone carvings and individual relics from the Romanesque and Gothic churches in Hungary. Among other things, it will also find the impressive triptychs Janosret, which arose in the 15th century.

First Floor

On the first floor, among other works of art from the Baroque and Classicism are issued. In addition, here you can find the art of the 19th century and late Gothic winged altars, paintings and sculptures.

Second Floor

The second floor deals mainly with the painting around the turn of the century. Also, here more sculptures will be exhibited from the 20th century.

Third floor

The third floor houses among other exhibits of contemporary art, 20th century art as well as coins and small sculptures from the 19th and 20th centuries.
