The Party of the Hungarian Working People (Hungarian Magyar Dolgozók Pártja, short MDP) was a communist party in Hungary. From 1949 to 1956 she was the ruling party in the country.

The MDP emerged from the Communist Party and the Social Democratic Party on 12 June 1948. Party chairman was Árpád Szakasits. The crucial position of Secretary General was Matyas Rakosi, under whose leadership Hungary and adopted a Stalinist course. In July 1956 Rakosi was from his office to Ernő Gerő.

During the Hungarian uprising of János Kádár dissolved on 25 October 1956 Ernő Gerő. On October 30, Prime Minister Imre Nagy was the end of the one-party system and the resolution of the MDP known.

The following day, a new party was founded: the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party ( Magyar Szocialista Munkáspárt - MSZMP ).
