Hunnenschlacht (Liszt)

An essential element of music is the chorale " Crux fidelis ", which, in the execution and completion of the entire work occurs at the end of exposure as a musical icon. This chorale is first heard in the tenor and bass trombones, and later on the organ, and symbolizes the Roman army. Furthermore, the use of trumpets as " battle cries " indicates that Franz Liszt has dealt with the study of instruments of antiquity, as trumpets as " tubae " demonstrably existed in similar form in Rome. Franz Liszt does not see the struggle between two peoples, but the struggle between civilization and barbarism, between Christianity and paganism in his work. The latter is particularly important in the final chorale expressed that emphasizes the victory of the Christians.
